Edmonton public school chairwoman Sarah Hoffman steps down, seeks NDP nomination

EDMONTON - The chairwoman of the Edmonton Public School Board is stepping down to seek the Alberta NDP nomination in Edmonton Glenora.

Sarah Hoffman says one of the reasons she wants to get into provincial politics includes how the government has handled the issue of gay-straight alliances in schools.

Hoffman, who is 34, is also worried about the Progressive Conservative's decision to accept 11 Wildrose members, which she says shows the government is shifting to the hard right.

Hoffman says she will continue serving as a school trustee, but will take an unpaid leave during the election campaign.

The NDP nomination is to be held on Feb. 13.

Tory Heather Klimchuk has won Edmonton Glenora in the last two elections with just under 40 per cent of the vote.
