WestJet adding daily flights from Calgary to Houston, Terrace, B.C., Yellowknife

WestJet is bullish on its Calgary hub despite the economic downturn in Alberta.

The airline is adding three new daily year-round flights beginning this summer from Calgary to Houston, Terrace, B.C., and Yellowknife, N.W.T.

Houston was a highly-requested route because of its ties to the energy industry, a company spokesman for the Calgary-based airline said in a release.

“Everyone knows that WestJet’s roots are in Calgary, but today’s announcement shows that we still have room to grow, especially as theworld-class facilities at the Calgary Airport continue to keep pace,”  said WestJet vice-president Chris Avery in a written release.

Earlier this month the Conference Board of Canada predicted Alberta will head into a recession on the heels of a dramatic slip in the price of oil.
