A Mountie who was shot last Saturday has died from his injuries.
Const. David Wynn, 42, died in hospital. He was shot while responding to a call at a casino in St. Albert, Alta., just northwest of Edmonton.
Wynn was shot in the head and never regained consciousness. He was married with three children.
Deputy RCMP Commissioner Marianne Ryan issued a statement saying the force has lost a dedicated member in the line of duty.
"His wife lost a husband, and his sons lost a father. Words cannot express the deep sadness we feel today," Ryan said.
Auxiliary Const. Derek Bond was also shot Saturday, but the injuries were non-life-threatening.
Police say the shooter was Shawn Maxwell Rehn, a 34-year-old man who was found dead in a nearby home.
Rehn had a long criminal history, The Canadian Press reports, dating back to his teenage years — a rap sheet that included assault, weapons convictions, break-ins and drug use.
Wynn's condition was listed as very grave and his family did not expected him to survive.
On Monday, his wife tearfully told reporters they had already said goodbye.
“We’re saying our goodbyes today and then from there, he’ll be in a better place,” Shelly MacInnis-Wynn said at a news conference.
“Today’s the day we say goodbye to Dave.”
Prime Minister Stephen Harper expressed condolences on behalf of all Canadians Wednesday.
"This was a brazen and cowardly assault on our brave law enforcement officers," Harper said in a statement. "It is a grim reminder of how law officers in communities across the country put their lives on the line every day to protect Canadians from harm.
"We mourn with all RCMP members today."
Alberta Premier Jim Prentice said Wynn paid the ultimate sacrifice.
"May his family and friends gather strength and find solace in the outpouring of support from citizens across our province and across our country, as together we grieve for our fallen Canadian hero."
St. Albert Mayor Nolan Crouse said the community is collectively mourning the loss of one of its officers.
"Policing is a noble profession, where ordinary people do extraordinary things to help keep our communities safe," the mayor said. "Our thoughts are with RCMP Constable Wynn's family as we collectively grieve."
There will be a regimental funeral for Wynn in the Edmonton area, with details to follow.
