Brief appearance for parents accused of malnutrition in death of toddler

CALGARY - A Calgary couple who police say contributed to their toddler son's death by failing to provide proper nutrition have made a brief court appearance.

A date for a preliminary hearing was supposed to be set for the couple, who remain free on bail, but the case was adjourned to Feb. 26.

Jennifer Clark, who is 38, and Jeromie Clark, who is 34, were charged in December with criminal negligence causing death and failure to provide the necessities of life.

Their 14-month-old son, John, died the day after he was brought to a Calgary hospital in November 2013.

Police have said the child had a staph infection that was untreatable due to complications from malnutrition.

They said the child's family followed strict dietary restrictions based on their faith and nutritional beliefs.
