A woman who was pulled from a river on Vancouver Island has died, while her baby son is in critical condition.
UPDATE, Feb. 2: The coroners service has identified the woman as Veronika Weaver of Comox.
Comox Valley RCMP received multiple 911 calls of a woman and a small child floating down the fast-flowing Puntledge River mid-afternoon on Friday, said Const. Don Sinclair in a news release.
He says police were on scene near Courtenay within minutes, and with the help of an RCMP helicopter located the seven-month-old baby who was rushed to St. Joseph's General Hospital by ambulance. He has since been airlifted to the BC Children's Hospital in Vancouver.
The woman, 26, did not survive, said police on Saturday.
“Our heartfelt sympathies go out to this family”, said RCMP Staff Sgt. Kevin Mazur in a statement. "Based on the evidence and information we have gathered so far, there is no indication that any third party was involved in the pair entering the water.”
