The beard itself was the inspiration for the company. Sulzle's girlfriend, Melissa Mitchell, asked him to grow a beard — a first for the Kamloops resident.
"After a couple months of growing my beard upon her request I felt like it needed some products. The beard was getting a little hard and a little itchy and I thought, 'Melissa if I'm going to keep this beard, I'm going to need something to soften it up,'" he told Daybreak Kamloops' Shelley Joyce.
"Yeah, if you went to kiss him it almost prickled you," said Mitchell.
"Now it's just nice and soft. It's conditioned and healthy."
Mitchell had spent years making her own skin and hair care products, so the couple started doing research and began making beard care products in their basement.
Last August, they launched Owl Brand Products, advertising a beard and skin care line made of all-natural ingredients. Their oils, balms, washes and moisturizers are for sale in Kamloops, B.C., and Salmon Arm, B.C., as well as online.
Sulzle said sales have been going well, and the couple hopes to expand throughout the province and to Alberta.
"We want to bring the beard back as accepted in all businesses and offices and get rid of the stereotypes," he said.
