Households in Canada’s two most western provinces have the highest averages for mortgage debts on principal residences. According to newly updated provincial data from Statistics Canada, the amount of mortgage debt averaged $241,800 for BC households while Alberta followed with an average of $205,200.

The numbers were lock-step with the rising value of real estate assets. BC again topped the list with the value of a primary residence averaging $535,400, followed by Ontario at $390,000 and Alberta at $382,600.

The stats also looked at how mortgage amounts and home values changed from 1999 to 2012. To see how each province fared, check out the interactive map and table below (prices are in 2012 constant dollars).
