Next Time Someone Says 'Canada's Not Racist,' Show Them This Video

O Canada, embracing multiculturalism hasn't always been an easy ride.

There's more to Canada than maple syrup reserves and universal health care. It's also a country where embracing multiculturalism hasn't always been an easy ride.

AJ+ host Sana Saeed took viewers on a cautionary tale through the darker chapters of Canadian history in a video posted to YouTube on Wednesday.

She discussed topics such as the systemic removal of aboriginal children from their families and the internment of thousands of Japanese Canadians during World War II.

You know, subjects that may have been ignored or glossed over in school.

In two minutes and 40 seconds, Saeed strung together a series of racist-in-retrospect events collected from Canada's past and present.

The mention of thousands of missing and murdered aboriginal girls and women came as a surprise to at least one viewer, asking if the lack of a national investigation was "really true?"

Though the Chinese head tax and Nova Scotia's Africville did not make the cut for this particular AJ+ short, it doesn't mean they don't deserve analysis or inclusion in history curricula.

Of course, there are Canadians out there working day in and day out to make this country a better place to live in. There's a limited amount of socio-ethno-geographical nuance you can edit into a short video.

Still, they're important events to confront – as long as articles like this one from Maclean's about contemporary society find relevance among readers.
