WHL Roundup: Connor Rankin scores SO winner as Hitmen edge Cougars 4-3

CALGARY - Connor Rankin scored the deciding goal in a shootout as the Calgary Hitmen slipped past the Prince George Cougars with a 4-3 victory in Western Hockey League action on Wednesday.

Travis Sanheim had a goal and an assist for Calgary (32-17-5), while Jake Virtanen and Kenton Helgesen rounded out the offence. Adam Tambellini also scored in the shootout.

Brad Morrison and Zach Pochiro led the Cougars (21-32-4) with a goal and a helper apiece. Tate Olson had the other goal.

Hitmen goaltender Brendan Burke made 19 saves through regulation and overtime and shut down 4-of-5 skaters in the shootout.

Prince George's Ty Edmonds stopped 49 shots through 65 minutes and added three more on five attempts in the shootout.

Calgary was 2 for 5 on the power play while the Cougars scored once on two chances with the man advantage.



PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. — Nick McBride stopped all 24 shots he faced as the Raiders blanked Spokane.

Tim Vanstone led Prince Albert (23-31-2) with a goal and an assist, while Colton Heffley and Matteo Gennaro rounded out the attack.

Garret Hughson made 27 saves for the Chiefs (26-24-4).



CRANBROOK, B.C. — Levi Cable and Rinat Valiev had a goal and two assists apiece as the Ice toppled Medicine Hat.

Jaedon Descheneau and Tim Bozon each scored a goal and set up another for Kootenay (28-26-1), while Vince Loschiavo and Sam Reinhart rounded out the attack.

Markus Eisenschmid, Chad Butcher and Cole Sanford replied for the Tigers (36-16-3).



LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — Jamal Watson scored twice, including a short-handed, empty-net goal, and added an assist to lead the Hurricanes over Moose Jaw.

Andrew Nielsen had a three-point night for Lethbridge (16-32-6), also firing a short-handed shot in an empty net and setting up two other goals. Florian Baltram, Johnny Wesley and Mike Winther rounded out the attack.

Jiri Smejkal led the Warriors (21-29-4) with a goal and two helpers and Tanner Eberle also scored.



VANCOUVER — Carter Popoff scored twice, including an empty-net goal with 26 seconds remaining in the game, as the Giants topped Edmonton.

Vladimir Bobylev also scored for Vancouver (23-29-3), and Tyler Benson chipped in with two assists.

Lane Bauer had the lone goal for the Oil Kings (25-26-6), opening up the scoring at 9:42 of the first period.



EVERETT, Wash. — Lukin Vladislav scored the only goal of a shootout to lift Tri-City over the Silvertips.

Beau McCue tied the game at 14:28 of the third period to force extra time, while Brendan O'Reilly and Lucas Nickles also scored for the Americans (26-26-3).

Remi Laurencelle and Nikita Scherbak had a goal and an assist apiece for Everett (34-16-5), which got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period. Patrick Bajkov rounded out the offence.
