Steve Fonyo, the marathon runner who followed in the footsteps of Terry Fox, was stabbed in a Surrey, B.C. home invasion early Friday morning, according to reports.
Surrey RCMP issued a news release about the incident, but would only say that a 49-year-old man with "an apparent stabbing injury" was taken to hospital in serious condition.
But neighbours living around the home, which is located on the 11000-block of 136th Street, told CBC News that Fonyo has lived there since Christmas. The Surrey Leader also reports Fonyo as the victim, saying the newspaper found out "through reliable sources."
Police believe it was a targeted home invasion involving three suspects who came to the residence and assaulted the victim.
Fonyo is often described as Terry Fox's successor. He lost one of his legs to cancer at age 12 and ran across Canada in the '80s, completing the run that Fox had to abandon due to his own illness. During his run, Fonyo raised millions for cancer research.
In more recent years, however, he has been plagued by trouble with the law, including charges of assault and theft. He was awarded the Order of Canada in 1985 but was stripped of the honour five years ago for an array of criminal convictions.
