Police are calling the death of a three-year-old girl in Surrey, B.C. suspicious, but the pre-schooler's mother has said it was all just a terrible accident.
Charlee Johanson was rushed to hospital on Wednesday and later died of her injuries, said police. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is working with Surrey RCMP to investigate the death, which they say happened in suspicious circumstances.
But Charlee's mother, Jennifer, has spoken out to say it was a bad fall that turned horribly wrong.
On Tuesday, Charlee fell off a laundry bin and bumped her head but seemed to be OK, Jennifer told Global News. The next day, however, Charlee didn't want to eat and was dizzy. She then had a seizure and was rushed to the hospital, according to her mother.
"This feels like a complete nightmare that I can’t wake up from," Jennifer told Global.
Charlie's stepfather, Cody Graham, told CTV that neither of them "would ever, ever, ever touch Charlee."
He told the station: "I would be more likely to hurt somebody who did touch Charlee then to ever touch Charlee myself."
No charges have been laid, and police haven't released any more information. The public should remember that regardless of their investigation, a family is now dealing with the death of a child, said IHIT's Sgt. Stephanie Ashton.
