It's a classic cocktail party conundrum: you're in the middle of chatting with someone about travelling, and they absolutely slaughter the name of wherever they're talking about. Do you correct them, or let them go on living this very specific lie?
Here's a halfway point — send them a link to this story. In an entirely enlightening post, travel site Thrillophilia.com put together a list of commonly mispronounced cities, countries and sights that are very useful.
Of course, much of this list depends on how you speak, as it seems to be based on a somewhat flat North American tone, but we're sure each of us has made at least one of these mistakes at some point. And yes, we do have a few more Canadian suggestions for the list, like say, REG-EYE-NAH or TURUNNO.
So whether you're actually planning to visit any of these places, or are simply mentioning them in conversation, it doesn't hurt to know how to say them properly. Just don't fake too much of a local accent — no one wants to hear that.
Check out the list below and let us know if there's anywhere else you find people mispronounce constantly.
