Happy Chinese New Year, everyone! Or shall we say, Gung Hay Fat Choy!
There are many fascinating traditions associated with the Lunar New Year and in honour of 2015's Year of the Ram, we're shedding some light on style superstitions associated with this popular holiday.
For instance, did you know that if you cut your hair too close to the Chinese New Year you'll chop off all your good luck? That's just one of the bundle of widely held beliefs surrounding this celebration.
Read on below to learn six ways your style decisions can ward off bad fortune in the coming year.
Story continues underneath the slideshow.
1. Get Your Hair Cut Before Chinese New Year's Eve
It's believed that if you get a haircut too close to Chinese New Year, you'll chop off all of your good luck, and that's not a good way to start the year.
2. Don't Wash Your Hair Or Have A Shower
Similarly, if you wash your hair or shower on New Year's Eve, it's considered bad luck because people believe that you'll wash away your luck for the year.
3. Don't Wear All Black
Black is associated with death and bad luck, which is why people who celebrate Chinese New Year avoid black clothing on the first day of the year.
4. Wear Red
Instead, opt for red clothing -- the colour is believed to be the "ultimate luck bringer."
5. Avoid Buying Shoes
In Cantonese, shoes are a homonym for "rough," so it's believed that you should avoid buying footwear to prevent rough times in the new year.
6. Settle Your Debts
Chinese New Year comes right after the craziness that is holiday shopping, so instead of buying that new pair of shoes, you should pay off all your credit cards and start the year with a clean slate.
