Watching a (good) New York Fashion Week runway show from the front row -- or reviewing each look on a computer screen -- is inspiring, to say the least. The entire experience is unlike any other; upbeat tracks blare through surround sound speakers as towering models float down the aisle in flawlessly styled outfits. The pit of photographers snap frantically until the 10-minute extravaganza is up, the designer bows, and you're left feeling elated as you carry on through Fashion Week.
But, the story is very different from the other side. The runway show experience is a carefully calculated effort by an entire team of people working behind the scenes to pull it all together. We got backstage access to KYE's Fall/Winter 2015/2016 show in New York, and let us tell you: it's definitely something else.
Upon entrance, chaos.
Interns in black T-shirts are scurrying about holding shoes, water bottles, and fun fur; makeup artists are sneaking Clif Bar breaks between lipstick applications; models are dressing and undressing faster than you can say,"Oh, that's a naked human." We're feeling stressed, confused, and unsure of where to stand when somebody important in a headset says, "It's time."
Suddenly, the frenzy stops and everyone is exactly where they need to be. The looks are lined up in perfect order as the music begins to play. Once the show is over, the next designer on the time slot swings into high gear. Suffice to say, it's a different kind of magical.
