Standoff over, Amber Alert suspect Jonas Budd believed in custody

A 16-hour standoff is over and Amber Alert suspect Jonas Budd in custody, his sister says.

Police had surrounded a house at Sturgeon Landing, Sask., Thursday morning, but Budd — wanted for the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy and the alleged abduction of the boy's 17-year-old girlfriend — did not give himself up until early Friday morning, his sister Joyce Budd said on her Facebook page.

"End of it. My brother is in custody. Thank you for the support to many family and friends and friends of Jonas' and new friends made through this difficult time," Joyce Budd said.

Police haven't provided any update on the standoff since Thursday evening.

It all started Wednesday morning when someone fatally shot 17-year-old Dustin Bird at a home on the Lac La Ronge Indian Band in northern Saskatchewan. Police said Budd was a suspect and was also responsible for the abduction of the 17-year-old girl, who is the daughter of his ex-partner.

Sturgeon Landing is close to the Manitoba border, about 120 kilometres south of Flin Flon.
