Jennifer Abel dives to 3rd-place finish at Grand Prix in Germany

A hiccup on her last of five dives cost Canada’s Jennifer Abel a chance at victory Saturday but not a spot on the podium as she placed third in the women’s three-metre final at the opening stop on the FINA Grand Prix circuit in Rostock, Germany.

The Laval, Que., native struggled with her twisting to dive, finishing with 336.30 points.

It was Canada’s second medal in as many days at the competition, following a gold-medal performance by Montreal’s Meaghan Benfeito on the 10m tower on Friday.

China’s Lin Qu nailed her final dive to win with 341.25 points, slightly ahead of fourth-round leader Tania Cagnotto (341.05) of Italy who received 6.5s and 7.0s for her inward dive.

Pamela Ware of Beloeil, Que., finished sixth Saturday’s final.

The competition ends Sunday.
