Alberta emergency officials stage mock ice storm to help prepare for disasters

EDMONTON - The Alberta government and emergency management experts are conducting a three-day exercise to help better prepare for future disasters.

Representatives from the government, First Nations, industry and emergency agencies are teaming up this week to review and test their plans.

A mock ice storm with building collapses, highway closures, power outages and train derailments will test the government’s response to various scenarios.

Municipal Affairs Minister Diana McQueen says the goal is to better respond to real disasters and to maintain Alberta’s emergency management readiness.

McQueen is urging people to download the Alberta Emergency Alert smartphone app to stay informed on emergencies in their area.
