Health region spokeswoman Sheila Anderson says as many as three vacancies are causing the shortage.
Five midwife positions are funded, but one is vacant and two more will be vacated in the next six to eight weeks.
Anderson says the shortage could last until September.
She says they are trying to recruit locally, provincially and nationally, but any hired midwives will require additional training and accreditation.
As a result, home births may not be offered because two midwives are required to be present.
