Vancity Credit Union coming to remote Alert Bay community off B.C. coast

The remote B.C. coastal community of Alert Bay will be getting a new credit union, after nearly a year without local banking services. Vancity Credit Union will open a full service branch in the community this May.

Residents of Alert Bay and the 'Namgis First Nation lost their only credit union last spring. Anyone with banking needs has had to travel by boat to Port McNeill, a round trip that takes about three hours.

"Just even the simple thing like doing a deposit or making a withdrawal, it just became very challenging for people, so we're all pretty excited about where this has the potential to go," said 'Namgis counsellor Kelly Specht.

Vancity says its new branch will operate on part-time hours, while mortgage specialists and loans officers will attend the branch on a rotating schedule.
