Incredible Drone Video Shows The Heart Of A Volcano (VIDEO)

'It's Like Listening To The Heartbeat Of The Planet'

They lost their drones, but we think the video was worth it.

A team of filmmakers and explorers have captured some incredible close-up footage of a volcano inside Marum Crater on Ambrym Island in Vanuatu, but as you might expect, they couldn't get too close to the lava itself.

"The physiological effects of being inside the volcano are significant, in that you have every force down there trying to kill you," filmmaker Sam Cossman said in the National Geographic video.

To avoid the most-likely-fatal encounter, the filmmakers used drones fitted with GoPro cameras and devices to keep the video stable no matter how much they shook. However, some of the drones fell into the lava, while others succumbed to the heat.

"You have sulphur dioxide and toxic gases that are superheated, and just an incredible radiant heat that exceeds 1000 degrees Fahrenheit standing right next to it," said Cossman.

But the expedition wasn't only for the wow factor. The filmmakers also took thousands of photos of the crater that were compiled using specialized software into a never-before-seen 3D reconstruction.

Cossman said he thinks video can be a valuable addition to existing scientific research.

"I really believe there's an opportunity to merge those worlds of exploration and tech in coming back and reporting on all kinds of information that has not yet been discovered."

You can see the incredible footage in the video, above.
