Power outages put thousands in the dark

Thousands are without electrical power across the GTA and it is not known when the lights will come back on, according to area utility companies.

Toronto Hydro says roughly 10,000 of its customers are in the dark. Outages have hit thousands more north of the city, according to PowerStream.

The utility companies are blaming the blackouts on a combination of the bad weather that hit the region on Tuesday, and salt spray, which can interfere with electrical lines. Numerous transformer and pole fires have been reported across the GTA.

Toronto Hydro says the power is out in four general areas:

- in Etobicoke, between Dixon Road, Bloor Street West, Renforth Drive and Royal York Road.

- in Scarborough, between Sheppard Avenue East, Lawrence Avenue East, Birchmount Road and Brimley Road.

- in North York, between Sheppard Avenue, Wilson Avenue, Highway 400 and Keele Street.

- in the east end, between Lawrence Avenue East, Don Mills Road, St..Clair Avenue East and Victoria Park Avenue.

Toronto Hydro says its power outage map might not be accurate because of the many outages.
