Search underway for missing girl at Clayoquot Wilderness Resort

A massive search is underway for a 14-year-old girl who went missing while in a remote part of Vancouver Island's west coast.

Leanne John, 14, from Ahousaht was on a school trip to the Clayoquot Wilderness Resort on Bedwell Sound when she disappeared during a hike late Tuesday afternoon.

Ahousaht Chief Greg Louie says more than 100 people from his tiny community have been out searching the woods overnight looking for John.

"No news at all right now — no good news, no bad news," said Louie on Wednesday morning.

Dave Poulsen, the president of the Alberni Valley Rescue Squad, said three local search and rescue teams have joined RCMP, coast guard and military crews in the search.

"It sounds like she was grossly under-prepared for the outdoors ... Reports that we have are flip-flops, shorts and a hoodie... it was very cold here last night," said Poulsen.

A Search and Rescue helicopter from CFB Comox has been flying over the area as well, but was unable to spot anything though the dense tree canopy.

"The forest is just too dense for the helicopters to see anything with their infrared," said Louie.

Louie says concern for the girl's safety remains high.

The luxury eco-resort is only accessible by boat or float plane.
