CUPE, York University reach tentative deal

A strike at York University could be over as early as Tuesday.

Late Friday night the union representing 3,700 teaching assistants and contract workers reached a tentative deal with the school.

CUPE 3903 says it will not discuss the details of the agreement until they are presented to its members.

But the main sticking points were money, healthcare benefits and job security.

The union said the average take-home pay for TAs was about $15,000 a year after tuition was deducted.

Striking workers are expected to meet and vote on the contract Monday evening.

CUPE 3903 members have been on strike since Tuesday, just a few days after Local 3902, which represents teaching assistants at the University of Toronto, walked off the job.

Classes have continued at U of T during the strike, but were cancelled at York.
