Swimsuit season is coming, and if you're like us, you're probably freaking about how you're going to look in your bikini come summer. The Lammily doll wants to change that.
The 'Normal Barbie', which was created as an alternative to Barbie's super-slim frame, stars in a new ad encouraging women to love their bodies as they are.
In the video called "#DoYou," Lammily is seen worrying about her bikini body before going on a girls' trip to Miami. She's bombarded with provocative ads a la American Apparel and images of skinny models and women, something we women see in our everyday lives. Lammily even sees the effects of this narrative on social media -- while a photo of her DJing gets a shoutout from mom and three likes, another doll's bikini pics gets hundreds of likes and comments on her "perfect" appearance.
The video has a happy ending though -- Lammily hits the beach and realizes those images weren't realistic: the women she sees have stretch marks, pimples, scars, and other "flaws," proving there shouldn't be a standard when it comes to wearing swimsuits.
According to Lammily doll creator Nickolay Lamm, the commercial is meant to open up a conversation surrounding society's view of appearance. And while it's meant to be a "funny" parody, he hopes it will send a positive message to young people.
"I feel that in the doll world, the standards are funny. So, if we can laugh at the standards in the doll world, maybe it will be easier to laugh at them in the real world," he told Buzzfeed. "There's so much information out there, it's easy to get caught up and try to be someone you're not. The message of the video is to do you, to be yourself."
