Alberta financial adviser appeals murder conviction of disabled client

RED DEER, Alta. - A man is appealing his conviction in the bombing death of a young woman in central Alberta.

A jury found Brian Malley, who is 57, guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Victoria Shachtay (SHAK'-tay) at her home in Innisfail in 2011.

Shachtay, who was paralyzed in a car crash in 2004, died in her wheelchair when she opened a gift bag that exploded.

The gift bag containing a homemade pipe bomb had been left on the doorstep.

Malley became Shachtay's financial adviser after she received $575,000 court settlement from the crash.

Malley's case is scheduled for May 12 in the Court of Appeal in Calgary.
