Fire destroys Surrey home

A home in South Surrey has been destroyed in an early morning fire.

Surrey Firefighters were called to the house near 174A Street and 28 Avenue around 5:30 a.m. PT Saturday. Battalion Chief Ed Wells said the home was engulfed in flames when crews arrived.

"It was a strictly defensive exterior attack," he said. "It was through the roof and the walls were already coming in when crews arrived."

A renter living in the home had moved out a week earlier, and no one was home at the time of the fire.

Wells said the fire did not appear to be suspicious.
