Toronto Police arrest man in connection with underground parking thefts

Toronto Police say a 23-year-old man is behind a month-long string of thefts from cars parked in underground garages.

The suspect targeted 17 parking garages in total, including 11 near Bathurst St. and Steeles Ave. and six more in the Victoria Park Ave. and Ellesmere Rd. area between Feb. 13 and March 11.

Police said the thefts showed up as a "large increase" in the theft-from-autos statistics, and said there could be more victims.

Police said the suspect, who has no fixed address, surrendered to police early Monday morning.

The man faces 60 charges in total, including 17 counts of theft under $5,000 from a motor vehicle, 42 counts of mischief or damage related to a motor vehicle and one count of failing to comply.

Police thanked members of the public for their help with the ongoing investigation.
