CALGARY - Police have charged a 17-year-old male after a man's ear was cut off in an attack in northeast Calgary.

A man in his 30s was walking his dog in the 100 block of Coverdale Place NE on Feb. 13 when investigators say a group of youths approached him and began to utter threats.

The man tried to walk away and that's when police say one male pulled out a machete and attacked him.

The victim has several gash wounds on his face, head, shoulder, and back and his left ear was severed.

Police say people nearby heard the man scream and called 911, and the group left before police arrived.

The victim is expected to survive, but he requires extensive reconstructive surgery.

A 17-year-old was arrested Sunday and police have now charged him with aggravated assault, possession of a dangerous weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and two counts of breaching current conditions.
