Mountain Shadow Pub in Burnaby to be demolished

The Mountain Shadow Pub, a North Burnaby establishment that resembles a ski chalet nestled in the middle of a suburban neighbourhood, closes this month.

It has been a fixture in the community for more than 30 years. The watering hole, with its historic charm and dark wood beams and banisters, has been a popular hangout for Simon Fraser University students for years.

But on March 28th, it will close for good, and the site will be redeveloped for townhouses.

"Unfortunately we no longer fit with the neighbourhood, and that's the issue at hand, I guess," said manager Elyse MacMillan in an interview with On the Coast.

Bartender Anthony Dall'Antonia, who has worked at the pub for 10 years, says being in the building always makes him feel like he's been whisked off to Whistler.

"The Shadow's always been that close place where friends can go relax, watch the game, watch the fights, UFC," he said. "I'll miss that, just meeting friends for a drink or dinner."

A Facebook page and a petition to save the Mountain Shadow Pub has been established.
