50-Vehicle Pileup On Highway 401 Closes Lanes Near Trenton, Ont.

An overnight collision involving 50 vehicles, including several tractor-trailers, has shut down a stretch of southern Ontario's Highway 401 near Trenton.

The Ontario Provincial Police blamed the crash on poor weather and said it happened in the eastbound lanes of the highway. One tanker truck spilled 40,000 litres of oil amid the collision.

The OPP said four people were injured in the pileup, but their injuries are considered non-life-threatening.

Police were forced to close the entire highway between County Rd. 30 and Wallbridge Loyalist Rd.

One westbound lane in the area has since reopened. The OPP didn’t say when the rest of the debris would be cleared from the eastbound lanes.

More than 50 people involved in the collision were taken to a nearby hotel to spend the night.
