Dolce & Gabbana are finally speaking out on the controversy that caused many celebrities to urge people to boycott the Italian label after the designers made comments about children born through IVF treatments and gay adoption.
Italian fashion designers Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce sat down with CNN for an exclusive interview, where they attempted to clarify their viewpoints.
Dolce defended his original comments, where he and Gabbana stated, "We oppose gay adoptions. The only family is the traditional one. No chemical offsprings and rented uterus: life has a natural flow, there are things that should not be changed."
The designer said to CNN, "I believe in the traditional family. It is impossible to change my culture for something different. It's me… I respect all the world, all the culture."
He continued to say that he didn't judge people who chose IVF, although he previously called babies born through IVF as "chemistry children and synthetic children" to Italian magazine Panorama.
"Wombs for rent, sperm selected from a catalog... Who would agree to be the daughter of chemistry?," he told the mag. "Procreation must be an act of love, now not even psychiatrists are prepared to deal with the effects of these experiments."
After the comments were made, stars such as Elton John, Victoria Beckham, Ricky Martin and Courtney Love urged people to boycott the label.
On Wednesday, Madonna rallied against the designers, posting a campaign photo of herself from the brand's Fall Winter 2010 collection with the caption, "All babies contain a soul however they come to this earth and their families. "There is nothing synthetic about a soul!! So how can we dismiss IVF and surrogacy? Every soul comes to us to teach us a lesson. God has his hand in everything even technology! We are arrogant to think Man does anything on his own. As above so below! Think before you speak."
