Montreal drug busts lead to 9 arrests

Montreal police arrested nine men, including the suspected leader of a group with ties to street gangs, after carrying out several drug raids in the city.

The men appeared in court this afternoon to face several charges, including conspiracy, concealing money and various drug-related charges.

Two of the suspects, Célestin and Lapointe, were also charged with gangsterism.

The raids were carried out Wednesday evening in five homes situated in the Plateau, the Sud-Ouest borough and downtown Montreal.

Police seized small quantities of heroin, cocaine and marijuana, as well as $1,300 and cellular phones.

Police say they began their investigation in spring 2014, targeting a heroin and cocaine distribution ring that mainly operated in licensed establishments on Saint-Laurent Blvd. in the Plateau.
