RCMP say no officers were injured in the morning shooting in Wetaskiwin.
Police say Mounties were responding to a call at an apartment complex when at least one officer fired at a man and wounded him.
An air ambulance official said the man, who is 40, was flown to an Edmonton hospital and was in serious condition.
Witness Lorne Conklin, who lives across the parking lot, said a man who appeared to be armed with a bow and arrow kept walking in and out of a ground floor apartment.
Conklin said the man appeared to be in a standoff with a few Mounties, who had their guns drawn.
"I heard one police member say he threatened to shoot at them at one point," Conklin said.
"They had warned him to drop his weapon several times. I heard the shots and I saw him fall to the ground."
Members of the Alberta government's serious incident response team are investigating along with RCMP major crimes officers.
The response team is called in to review police actions that have led to serious injury or death.
