Edmonton's Muttart Conservatory Corpse Flower, Putrella, Will Bloom Again

Edmonton's stinkiest flower is getting set to bloom again.

Putrella, the cleverly-named corpse flower at the Muttart Conservatory, will unleash her putrid smell upon visitors once again, the City of Edmonton confirmed on Twitter earlier this week.

Putrella last bloomed in April of 2013, emitting a scent similar to rotting meat... or worse.

“It smelled like a diaper pail or hot garbage. It made me tear up a little,” Sarah Birmingham, a Muttart employee, said at the time.

The giant purple corpse flower, native to the jungles of Sumatra, often lies dormant for years between blooms, so conservatory staff were surprised by the quick turnaround for the smelly plant.

Putrella, which is currently standing four feet-tall, will likely grow to two metres-tall before blooming. It's too soon to say when the flower will bloom, but you can follow along on the conservatory's Facebook page for frequent updates.
