Dominica beats BVI in first leg, step closer to facing Canada in World Cup qualifying

ROSEAU, Dominica - Dominica is one step closer to facing Canada in World Cup qualifying.

Randolph Peltier scored the winning goal in the 82nd minute as host Dominica downed the British Virgin Islands 3-2 on Thursday in its first match of a two-game series.

Glenworth Elizee also scored for Dominica in the 45th minute while Mitchell Joseph struck for the 181st-ranked country in the 65th.

Edward Moss opened the scoring for British Virgin Islands 42 minutes into the game before Jordan Johnson gave his country a 2-1 lead in the 53rd.

British Virgin Islands are No. 201 in the world rankings with only Somalia, the Cayman Islands, Djibouti, Cook Islands, Anguilla and Bhutan ranking lower.

The second leg between Dominica and British Virgin Islands goes Sunday at Windsor Park in the capital city of Roseau.

Canada, ranked 116th, will host the winner on June 8 in Toronto, with the second leg set for a Caribbean island June 16.
