Transit referendum: 8 per cent of ballots already in

Elections B.C. says eight per cent of all eligible transit plebiscite ballots in Metro Vancouver have been returned.

The new data shows that more than 124,000 ballots have been sent in from 1.5 million registered voters and counted as of April 8.

Vancouver residents have led the way, with 17.8 per cent of all its eligible voters mailing in their packages, followed closely by those living in Richmond and then Surrey.

The question is: "Do you support a new 0.5 per cent Metro Vancouver Congestion Improvement Tax, to be dedicated to the Mayors' Transportation and Transit Plan? Yes or No."

A majority of 50 per cent plus one will be considered decisive.

CBC will update its interactive weekly to reflect how the 23 municipalities have been voting.

Voters can continue to register for a ballot until May 15, and the last day to mail in the ballot is May 29.
