Scotland's Muirhead beats Russia's Sidorova to win women's Players' Championship

TORONTO - Singles in both the seventh and eighth ends gave Scotland's Eve Muirhead a 4-2 win over Russia's Anna Sidorova in the women's championship game at the Players' Championship Grand Slam of Curling event on Sunday.Muirhead stole one in the eighth end to secure the victory.Sidorova opened the scoring with a single in the second end before Muirhead tied it in the third.The two sides again traded points in the fourth and fifth ends before Muirhead broke the 2-2 tie in the seventh.Muirhead led her rink by shooting 89 per cent. Sidorova struggled and finished the game at 67 per cent while her lead, Margarita Fomina led the match with 91 per cent shooting.Muirhead edged Ottawa's Rachel Homan 8-7 in the semifinal earlier in the day. Sidorova beat Edmonton's Val Sweeting 5-3 in the other semi.The men's final between Olympic champion Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and Winnipeg's Mike McEwen was scheduled for Saturday night.Jacobs topped Edmonton's Brendan Bottcher 6-5 earlier in the day while McEwen beat Toronto's John Epping 7-3.
