Missing cat reunited with owner after Plateau fire

Casey Kerr is relieved to be reunited with another one of his missing cats after his apartment was destroyed in a fire on Monday.

Kerr's girlfriend works at an animal shelter and sometimes brought home cats who had been malnourished, abused or abandoned to provide them with a little TLC.

On the morning of the fire, they had eight cats in their apartment.

They thought only five had been rescued, but it turns out a sixth – Cashew – was alive and well.

Curiosity didn't kill this cat

Curiosity brought Isaac Berman, a neighbour, to Kerr's building the day after the fire. That's when he spotted a cat on the second floor balcony and decided to help.

"It was a miracle. The kitty cat came out onto the balcony," said Berman. "I said, 'Now we have to save the cat!'"

Recruiting help from his friends who live across the street, Berman managed to get into the second floor apartment and rescue the orange cat that seemed to be in good shape, but terrified.

"We gained his trust with snacks and then put him in a cat cage to bring him down," Berman said.

Raluca Mantu, one of Berman's friends who lives across the street, took the cat in.

"I fed him, I gave him water and then I made posters to print and post around the building in case the owner would come look for the cat," she said.

But putting up posters wasn't necessary.

This morning, Mantu spotted a man speaking with a police officer outside the building and asked the man if he was missing an orange cat.

That man was Casey Kerr.

"[Kerr] was actually shaking and he was hugging the cat, and the cat was very happy," Mantu says. "It was really emotional, really nice."
