James Beard Foundation will keep its restaurant and chefs awards gala in Chicago through 2017

The first James Beard Foundation awards gala to be held in Chicago hasn't even happened yet, but organizers already have decided to stick around for a while.

Last year, the foundation announced that its 2015 ceremony honouring the nation's top chefs and restaurateurs would move from New York City to the Windy City. On Thursday, they said the 2016 and 2017 awards also would be held in Chicago. This year's event is at the Lyric Opera of Chicago on May 4. A separate ceremony for media awards will remain in New York.

The James Beard awards were first held in 1991, and were always held in New York. They honour those who follow in the footsteps of Beard, considered the dean of American cooking when he died in 1985.
