6-year-old girl hit by SUV in Port Coquitlam dies of injuries

A six-year-old girl who was one of four pedestrians hit on Sunday by an SUV in Port Coquitlam, B.C., has now died of her injuries, according to police.

"It is with great sadness that the Coquitlam RCMP advises that the six-year-old girl involved in the collision on Shaughnessy Street on April 19 succumbed to her injuries in a hospital earlier this morning," wrote RCMP in a release.

The SUV driver, a woman in her 40s, struck the girl and three others walking in a parking lot in front of a busy strip mall at Shaughnessy St. and Lions Way.

She had a learner's permit, and was following all conditions, including displaying a red "L" and having a supervisor in the front seat, said police.

Two others involved in the crash remain in hospital in a serious condition, while another has been released from hospital with minor injuries, according to Coquitlam RCMP.

The driver is co-operating with the investigation, said police.
