If you just cleaned out your bookshelf, this is the perfect time to visit your favourite local bookstore and fill it back up again.

Fortunately, the shelves should be stocked with a variety of great books by female authors, covering ground from short stories to self help and everything in between.

It’s been a good year for women who write, on the whole. Four women made it on to the Giller shortlist. Two more made the shortlist for the Governor General’s literary award, and a woman took home the prize for poetry. A female author, Kim Thuy, won Canada Reads and another, Elizabeth Kolbert, just won a Pulitzer. (You’ll find both of them on this list below.) And of course, women are all over the bestseller lists in every category.

All of this speaks to the fact that more and more, women get to tell the stories of their lives, in their own words. The 14 books below, all must-reads by women for this spring, cover a lot of ground — but we’re confident that there'll be something here for everyone.
