Edmonton Construction Worker Dies After Being Buried Under Debris

EDMONTON - A construction worker in Edmonton is dead after he was buried beneath two metres of debris in a collapsed trench.

The accident happened around 5 p.m. Tuesday as a construction crew was working on underground services for a new house on the city's west side.

Emergency crews had to shore up the sides of the three-metre deep trench before they could pull the 55-year-old man out.

He was dead by the time they reached him around 11 p.m.

His name has not been released, but a spokesman for Alberta's Occupational Health and Safety department says the man was a temporary worker from Edmonton's Bissell Centre.

The accident happened on the National Day of Mourning, which is held every April 28 to remember workers who died or were injured on the job. (CHED)
