The incident happened at around 6:10 p.m.
Montreal police say a man and a woman were walking south on Papineau Ave., near Laurier Ave. when the man heard a cracking sound.
He turned around to see the tree falling, and pushed the woman out of the way in time before the tree came crashing down.
"Part of the tree still fell on them, but luckily he managed to push her out of the danger zone. This could have ended much differently," said Montreal police spokesman Jean-Pierre Brabant.
Police say they two were hit with branches and suffered minor injuries.
The woman was taken to hospital to be treated for injuries to her head and shoulder. The man was hurt on his leg.
At the time of the incident, winds were gusting to 68 kilometres per hour.
Police said it appeared the tree was sick.
"It looks like it had some bacteria that went through it. The inside of the tree was very soft and weak," said Brabant.
