Sitting For Extended Periods Of Time Increases Health Risks And Shortens Life Span

8 Facts That Will Make You Think Twice About Sitting All Day

By now, everyone knows that sitting for extended periods of time is unhealthy, but in a new video released by BuzzFeed, Jessica Yang takes it a step further, and reveals why we should stand instead.

More than 55 per cent of the American population spend half of their waking hours (that's 7.7 hours) in sedentary situations like sitting — and that's not including the time spent sleeping, according to JustStand.org.

"We’ve become so sedentary that 30 minutes a day at the gym may not counteract the detrimental effects of eight, nine or 10 hours of sitting," said Dr. Genevieve Healy during a JustStand wellness summit.

The simple solution is to choose standing over sitting.
