When it comes to promoting body diversity in fashion, Scandinavia knows what's up!
Last week, we told you about how Swedish retailer Lindex decided to use their own workers to model clothing, and now, Icelandic Glamour is taking a stand against fashion norms in their own way.
The magazine recently published an editorial spread featuring a group of five plus-size models looking absolutely beautiful. The women -- Ashley Graham, Marquita Pring, Julie Henderson, Inga Eiriksdottir and Danielle Redman -- have banded together to form a collective called ALDA ("wave" in Icelandic) that aims to promote body diversity in the modelling industry.
In their spread, the models are seen looking natural and radiant, posing in jeans and tees, lingerie and even nude. In the issue, the models discuss their motivation behind the collective.
"We had all worked together for many years before our agency closed a lot of their divisions including plus size, which is the one we were in. I contacted the girls I knew and the ones that had been the most successful in the business to see how we could, as a group, have impact on the business," explains Eiriksdottir.
She continues, "Even if it might sound strange since we [are models], which is a lot about the outside looks, we are more interested in building strong self esteem in women rather than just focusing on the looks."
The women of ALDA are now all signed to IMG models, and through their collective, they hope to continue challenging "conventional notions in the fashion industry and promote a holistic view of beauty, via opportunities without categories, labels and limitations."
They were also featured in the February/March 2015 issue of Bust magazine, in which they proved fitness wear can be totally sexy on everybody.
