Like it or not, a royalty review will happen in Alberta.
Premier-designate Rachel Notley told reporters Tuesday that a royalty review will take place in this term of the incoming NDP government, but did not announce an exact timing.
“I’m not going to make any specific determinations around timing except to say it was in our platform, it will happen within this term and it will be preceded by good, thorough discussions with all stakeholders, including industry,” she said, according to The Globe and Mail. “No one will be surprised by the way it unfolds."
In her campaign promises, Notley said the NDP would review the overall royalty structure to ensure that Albertans are getting a fair return for their non-renewable resources.
Notley has spent time reaching out to the oil and gas sector since last week's win, calling around to the leaders of some of the largest energy companies in the province.
Doug Suttles, CEO of Calgary-based oil and gas company Encana, told CBC News he took a call from Notley recently.
"The core of the conversation was, let's make sure we talk as you consider alternatives, and if we can support in any way with information or insights, we are happy to provide that," he said.
"I've got to believe her biggest challenge at the moment is putting her government together, and it's a bit early to be speculating on policy changes."
Last week, Notley told reporters she would work with business leaders to assure them her government will be a partner in building the province.
"I'm hopeful that over the course of the next two weeks they will come to realize that things are going to be just A-OK over here in Alberta," she said.
