Mounties say public tips crucial to capture of escaped B.C. convict

SURREY, B.C. - Police have tracked down an escaped convict six weeks after a Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest.

Forty-three-year-old Shawn Merrick has been at large since March 31 after breaking out of a minimum-security prison where he was serving time for second-degree murder and robbery.

Police say he tried holding up a bank in Surrey, B.C., in April and is suspected in a string of robberies in the Langley area.

The Mounties say tips from the public were instrumental in finding and capturing Merrick.

He has been returned to prison to serve out the remainder of his sentence.

Merrick faces six new robbery charges.
