When Does The FIFA Women's World Cup Start?

Countdown to kickoff: just over two weeks.

The FIFA Women's World Cup is coming to Canada from June 6 to July 5, and the host country has a chance at glory.

The first match is set to see Canada play China at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium at 4 p.m. local time on June 6. It will mark the start of a tournament that could give the Great White North a chance at redemption on the pitch.

The last time we saw Canada's women's soccer team play in a competition at this level was at the 2012 London Olympics, when they lost a nailbiter of a game to the United States.

They were knocked out of a chance at gold with a score of 4-3, after a series of controversial calls by the referee.

At one point, Norwegian ref Christina Pedersen didn't call a handball on American player Megan Rapinoe. But she later called a rare delay of game on Canadian goalkeeper Erin MacLeod because she held the ball for too long.

After that came a fateful hand ball call on Canadian defender Marie-Eve Nault, which led to a U.S.A. penalty kick that tied the score at three goals each. American Alex Morgan put the game away in extra time.

Canada would go on to take a bronze medal.

And though the team returned to Canada as heroes in 2012, the pressure is on for them to succeed once more, especially in front of a home crowd.

The team will be captained by talismanic striker Christine Sinclair, who scored three goals against the U.S. in that controversial game in 2012.

Also returning are Nault and McLeod, who are undoubtedly looking to bury that game in history.

The squad, which FIFA ranks eighth in the world, has been training in Mexico and the United States throughout May and is set to play a warm-up match against England on May 29.

Any Torontonians who wish to see Women's World Cup Games live will have to travel. Matches will only be taking place in Moncton, Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Vancouver, due to the Pan Am games running July 10 to 26 in Toronto.

The final World Cup game will take place at Vancouver's BC Place Stadium on July 5 at 4 p.m. local time.
