It can sometimes look like chicken, but tempeh is on a whole other level.

In fact, tempeh, made from fermented soy beans, has a nutty and mushroom-like taste. With the right spices, soy sauce or even just salt and pepper, you can craft your meat substitute to taste like anything... maybe even chicken.

According to the video above by Time, a lot of focus around the health benefits of tempeh also include the health benefits of soy. For starters, a three ounce serving of tempeh can have 16 grams of protein, which is great for any vegetarian or a meat-eater looking to take a break.

This soy product, originally from Indonesia, is also a good source of calcium and iron. And just like precautions around buying soy that is genetically modified, experts recommend buying tempeh (and tofu) organic.
