Kitsilano gas leak forces evacuation near 5th Avenue & Collingwood

A gas leak in Kitsilano forced an evacuation of primarily homes in a one-block radius near Bayview Community Elementary school on Monday afternoon.

Vancouver Fire tweeted that the Hazardous Materials Response Team and natural gas company FortisBC were on the scene near 5th Avenue and Collingwood Street.

"Some crews were working here on a gas line, on the road and they ruptured an eight-inch gas line. There's approximately a two-and-a-half inch hole in the gas line," said Dale Booth, Vancouver Fire assistant chief.

The Vancouver School Board tweeted around 5 p.m. PT that the gas was no longer leaking from the ruptured line.
